Dark Holler Comics®

Dark Holler Comics® is a digital comics publishing company. The publishing platform used by DHC is called the MiMEngine (Motion Interactive Messaging Experience). Normal comic book conventions, such as a traditional comic books or graphic novels don't translate well on common devices like modern phones. In order to target the most commonly used devices the comic book format has to change. Dark Holler Comics® champions a solution for publishing sequential art media on common devices for an advanced interactive experience. More than just a PDF reader, the publishing platform supports creators that want to incorporate audio, animation, and interactions.

The MiMEngine, an open source publishing platform built on Google Cloud uses the Flutter SDK to produce apps for iOS and Android that storytellers can use to craft stories, train AI characters within their stories, and publish MiMEs (books with AI characters) to gain readership and build their business.

Dark Holler Comics® is proud to announce an upcoming project, 'The Coal Prince'. The Coal Prince® is a story about a young boy from a coal camp in the heart of Appalachia that becomes a hero.

Appalachia needs heroes in media and pop culture. Major metropolitan areas are overrun with stories of heroic deeds. Their heroes save the world, save the universe. Appalachia needs a hero to save the world.

Stone, a young boy that discovers he has powers to manipulate time and see thru almost anything is able to save his father and 41 other coal miners from a mining disaster. After learning of his powers and the struggle to use them, Stone quickly realizes he is needed in multiple efforts. He is thrust in the middle of a geopolitical war in the homeland he loves, recruited by an alien to fight in a far off place, and deemed a Seer, a protector of reality. From epic battles to small town politics, Stone’s story spans space and time.

Justin Hall joins Civic Imagination Incubator September 16, 2022

A diverse cohort of media creators began exploring their civic imaginations through storytelling at the official launch of WKU's first Civic Imagination Incubator on Thursday, Sept. 15, at the university's Innovation Campus.

A museum curator, a former multi-media journalist, a web developer, a cinematography and video production editor, a comics writer and a WKU user experience major from the region will collaborate in a series of mostly-virtual meetups over the next eight months to develop cross-medium story worlds and media projects.

Civic Imagination Incubator Launches

WKU Innovation Campus CEO Henry "Buddy" Steen recently met with the six creators in the Civic Imagination Incubator run in partnership with the University of Southern California, AccelerateKY, and Western Kentucky University Potter College of Arts & Letters, alongside AccelerateKY fellow Ruthie Caldwell.
